What are childcare courses about?Most childcare workers complete a Certificate III in Children’s Services as qualification for a position in childcare. A Diploma in Children’s Services is the minimum requirement. TAFE offers these childcare courses, as well as a Diploma in Out of School Hours Care and a Certificate IV in Out of School Hours Care. These childcare courses can also be completed at private institutions.

TAFE Certificate III in Children’s Services is especially designed for those who are working or intending to work within the children’s services industry. It provides a useful introduction into understanding, caring for and supporting the development of young children. The Certificate III is a nationally recognised and Austudy approved childcare course.

Childcare courses and certificatesThe Certificate III has a workload of 11 hours per week for a period of 1 year, although these arrangements are flexible. The course can be completed in class or by correspondence. There is no pre-requisite for entry, however a certificate of high school completion or mature age students are preferred.

The degree includes a 100 hour period of work placement to ensure experience is gained. A Senior First Aid Certificate must also be completed to receive the qualification. Students will need to pass a criminal record check, and a working with children check. This childcare course is approved under the Australian Government’s Productivity Places Program, which offers free training to eligible students.

The Certificate III childcare course covers child development, health and safety, hygiene practices, nutrition and caring for babies and children. There are 18 units to be completed including:

  • Support Children’s Development in a Service
  • Care for Infants
  • Deliver Services/Activities to Stimulate Children’s Development and Enhance their Leisure
  • Develop an Understanding of Children’s Interests and Developmental Needs
  • Ensure Children’s Health and Safety, Respond to Illness, Accidents and Emergencies
  • Participate in Work Place Safety Procedures
  • Work with a Legal Duty of Care and Ethical Framework
  • Workplace Hygiene
  • Work Effectively with Families in Caring for the Child
  • Professional Experience

Upon successful completion of this childcare course you will receive a nationally recognised qualification CHC30402 Certificate III in Children’s Services. Most institutions will provide information and connection to get you started in your search for employment.
